National Reconciliation Gatherings

Throughout 2016, Reconciliation Canada hosted a series of National Reconciliation Gatherings across the country. National Reconciliation Gatherings are regional events that bring together community leaders from diverse backgrounds to discuss the active implementation of reconciliation in their region.

Each event brought together approximately 100 participants for a full-day reconciliation dialogue. The gatherings provided space that allows for individual transformation and renewed relationship building, as well as an opportunity to highlight local leaders in reconciliation to inspire continued community-driven reconciliation action.

National Reconciliation Gatherings have taken place in:

  • Vancouver, BC
  • Membertou, NS
  • Winnipeg, MB
  • Saskatoon, SK
  • Whitehorse, YT
  • Montreal, QC

Each gathering was designed to expand perspectives and understandings of reconciliation. Participants had the opportunity to experience a multicultural survivors panel, as well as breakout sessions based on three concepts:

  • Optimum Potential
  • Shared Prosperity
  • Social and Systemic Change

Reconciliation Canada recognizes these concepts as foundational to reconciliation and is essential in achieving sustainable, resilient communities.

National Reconciliation Gatherings are part of a larger national engagement strategy to build a national narrative on reconciliation and catalyze action. Reconciliation Canada has initiatives planned across the country through 2016- 2017 to engage individuals, groups, and organizations in the reconciliation process, including:

Reconciliation in Action: A National Engagement Strategy,
a Canada 150 Signature Project, is funded in part by the Government of Canada
